Ukrainian Fixer Alla Didur Wins 2026 Kurt Schork Award

Ukrainian journalist and local producer Alla Didur has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Kurt Schork News Fixer Award for her exceptional contributions to foreign reporting amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund, established in memory of the American war correspondent killed in Sierra Leone in 2000, announced the distinction on October 27.
The international jury recognized Didur for her indispensable on-the-ground collaboration across three prominent published features. These include a December 2025 account detailing civilian survival during intense bombardments in Odessa published by American print media, an August 2025 examination of modern drone warfare tactics featured in a Pennsylvania publication, and a February analysis detailing how Ukraine defends its critical railway infrastructure against escalating Russian air attacks.

In honoring her work, the award panel praised Didur for displaying exemplary courage, sensitivity, and deep compassion. The jury specifically cited her extraordinary organizational skills, intellectual and editorial contributions to international dispatches, clear thinking, composure under fire, and sharp ability to assess and manage severe security risks.
The recognition sheds light on the traditionally unheralded role of local fixers, whose behind-the-scenes coordination makes international journalism possible in hazardous foreign zones and difficult-to-access conflict areas. Derived from the English verb to fix, the profession involves navigating local logistics, arranging interviews, securing transport, and providing vital cultural and political context that allows visiting reporters to focus on core storytelling.
Alongside her work with major American outlets, Didur collaborates extensively with various French, European, Anglo-Saxon, and Scandinavian news organizations. Editors who have worked alongside her emphasize her acute operational instincts in managing complex access to restricted locations and vulnerable communities on the front lines.
