Tennessee Authorities Launch Manhunt After Convicted Murderer Escapes Prison

Tennessee law enforcement and corrections officials have mobilized a widespread manhunt following the weekend escape of a convicted murderer from a state correctional facility. The search centers on 28-year-old Jacob Morley, who slipped away from the Northwest Correctional Complex in the Lake County community of Tiptonville on Sunday evening.

According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, staff members discovered Morley was missing during a routine check late Sunday night. Prison officials subsequently conducted an emergency headcount to confirm the disappearance, while a review of facility surveillance footage revealed how the breach occurred. The video showed Morley scaling or otherwise breaching the perimeter fence while still dressed in his official Department of Correction uniform.

State corrections authorities describe Morley as standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing approximately 240 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. At the time of his escape, he was serving a life sentence for murder. Court and corrections records indicate he was convicted in connection with the death of Cody Birchfield, a Tennessee resident who vanished in February 2022. Investigators located Birchfield’s body buried underneath Morley’s residence roughly a month after the initial missing person report.

In addition to his life sentence for murder, Morley’s criminal record includes convictions for aggravated burglary, evidence tampering, evading arrest, and vandalism.

State officials have issued an urgent advisory warning the public against taking matters into their own hands. Authorities explicitly instructed citizens not to attempt to apprehend the fugitive, urging anyone with relevant information regarding his current whereabouts to contact the Department of Correction directly through their dedicated tip line at (844) 832-3463.

The breach at the Tiptonville facility arrives more than a year after a separate high-profile correctional escape in New Orleans, where 10 detainees managed to slip out of a local jail through a hole in a wall behind a toilet in one of the largest regional breakouts in recent memory. All 10 of those individuals were eventually recaptured by law enforcement.
