Taft Police Officer Daniel Trujillo Found Shot to Death in West Houston Apartment

The Houston Police Department has launched a homicide investigation after a South Texas law enforcement officer was found fatally shot inside an apartment in west Harris County on Friday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Daniel Trujillo, a three-year veteran of the Taft Police Department. According to investigators, the shooting took place at an apartment complex located along Interstate 10, situated just past West Beltway 8 on the city’s west side.

Officers with the Houston Police Department were initially dispatched to the scene at approximately 4:30 p.m. following reports of a person down. Upon arrival, responding units discovered Trujillo unresponsive inside the residence. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel.

Officials with the Taft Police Department, based in San Patricio County, confirmed that the Houston apartment where the shooting occurred was Trujillo’s residence. The department expressed profound grief over the loss of their colleague, noting that Trujillo had been a dedicated member of their force for several years.

“During his time with our department, he served our community with dedication and commitment, and his loss is deeply felt by those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him,” the Taft Police Department said in a formal statement released via social media. “Our thoughts, prayers, and sincere condolences are with Officer Trujillo’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched during this incredibly difficult time.”

As of this weekend, significant questions remain regarding the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. Houston police have not yet released any information regarding a potential motive or the identity of any suspects. It remains unclear if there were any signs of forced entry or if witnesses reported hearing gunfire prior to the discovery of the body.

The Taft Police Department has requested that the public keep Trujillo’s colleagues and loved ones in their prayers as they navigate the sudden loss. Trujillo’s career in South Texas was characterized by the department as one of service and community engagement.
