Senate Democrats Inject $500,000 Into Unexpected Mississippi Race

The campaign arm for Senate Democrats is directing $500,000 into Mississippi as part of a coordinated advertising campaign with Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom. The financial investment marks an effort to expand the party’s electoral map into Republican-held territory as control of the chamber hangs in the balance.
The newly launched advertisement highlights Colom’s professional background as a district attorney and features him vowing to take on anyone standing in the way of Mississippi’s interests. In the spot, Colom also targets incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, accusing her of having forgotten the state. The commercial is scheduled to begin running statewide across television and digital platforms on Thursday.
Tommy Garcia, a spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, framed the move as part of a broader strategy to challenge the GOP on multiple fronts. Senate Democrats have expanded the battleground deep into Republican territory and we are continuing to pursue every path possible to win a Senate majority, Garcia stated.
The race has drawn substantial financial participation from major outside groups on both sides of the political aisle. The Democratic-aligned Senate Majority PAC and the Republican Senate Leadership Fund are each committing seven-figure sums to the contest, signaling an unexpected escalation in a state typically considered secure for Republicans.
Democratic leaders began signaling a potential opening in the state earlier this year. In August, Senate Democratic leadership pointed to the contest as a difficult long shot while characterizing Hyde-Smith as vulnerable. Party leaders have previously highlighted tensions surrounding the incumbent senator’s decision to block Colom’s nomination to a federal judgeship during Joe Biden’s administration.
Republicans have similarly stepped up their presence in the state to defend the incumbent seat. President Donald Trump campaigned alongside Hyde-Smith earlier in the week, delivering sharp criticism of the Democratic challenger by describing Colom as a fake candidate who pretends to be moderate.
