Rep. Haley Stevens Stands by Michigan Nominee Abdul El-Sayed Amid Ad Controversy

U.S. Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) affirmed her ongoing support for Democratic Michigan U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on Wednesday, stating during a television appearance that she believes he is capable of and will denounce controversial campaign advertisements.

Speaking on CNN’s “The Source,” Stevens addressed concerns regarding two specific ads associated with the campaign landscape. One advertisement features Tucker Carlson, whom Stevens characterized as a racist, anti-black, white supremacist apologist. The second advertisement has drawn fierce criticism for blaming Jewish people for high grocery prices.

Stevens emphasized the tangible impact such messaging has on vulnerable populations. She noted that propping up Carlson alienates and targets the Black community, while attributing economic pressures like expensive groceries and unaffordable healthcare to Jewish people creates direct dangers for the Jewish community. These elements, she argued, make minority communities feel less safe and undermine actual public safety.

Despite these concerns, Stevens maintained that the nominee is positioned to address the controversy directly. She expressed full confidence that El-Sayed has the capacity to disavow both the advertisement featuring Carlson and the rhetoric blaming Jews for the cost of groceries, while also taking the ads down.

Encouraging the campaign to reject hateful messaging and actively call it out, Stevens stressed the importance of ensuring that diverse voter coalitions feel secure and welcome at the polls. She reiterated her belief that the candidate will ultimately take the right course of action by publicly disavowing the disputed material.
