Ramaswamy Defends Attack Ad Featuring Opponent’s Mother, Alleging Prior Defamation

The escalating race between Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Amy Acton has taken a deeply personal turn as both candidates trade accusations involving their respective families. Ramaswamy addressed the recent controversy surrounding an attack ad his campaign released earlier this month, which featured Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, labeling her own daughter a liar.

Speaking in a recent television interview, Ramaswamy defended the decision to involve Arthur in the campaign, characterizing it as a defensive measure. He claimed that the Acton campaign had previously targeted his own mother in a manner he described as defamation. While Ramaswamy did not cite a specific new instance of alleged defamation during his remarks, he pointed to a philosophy of standing up for himself when attacked. He stated that while he was raised never to start a fight, he believes in finishing those he finds himself in to defend the truth.

The friction regarding family members appears to stem from an August press release issued by the Acton campaign. That release scrutinized Ramaswamy’s former pharmaceutical company, Axovant, which he founded to develop Alzheimer’s medication. The Acton campaign alleged that Ramaswamy had hired his mother to manipulate clinical trial data as part of a pharmaceutical scheme intended to profit from patients. Addie Bullock, a communications director for Acton, specifically accused Ramaswamy of using his mother’s involvement to generate wealth through deceptive means.

Axovant saw its valuation reach approximately $350 million following its initial public offering. However, the company’s stock price later collapsed after its primary Alzheimer’s drug failed Phase 3 clinical testing. A nonpartisan fact-checker subsequently investigated the Acton campaign’s claims that Ramaswamy scammed investors with a drug he knew was ineffective, concluding that those specific allegations were mostly false.

In the ad released by the Ramaswamy campaign, Donna Arthur’s appearance has been particularly contentious due to Acton’s documented history of childhood trauma. Acton has spoken publicly about experiencing physical and sexual abuse, as well as neglect, during her youth. Court documents indicate that Arthur remained with Acton’s stepfather even after he faced charges of sexually abusing Acton when she was 12 years old. This background has led to significant criticism of the Ramaswamy campaign for bringing Arthur into the political spotlight.

Ramaswamy countered this criticism by suggesting that the media has remained silent regarding attacks on his mother while focusing exclusively on the tactics used against Acton. He characterized the situation as a double standard where his family is fair game for political opponents while his own responses are scrutinized.

Recent polling data indicates a narrow race, with Acton leading Ramaswamy by approximately 2 percentage points. However, this margin remains within the poll’s 2-point margin of error, suggesting the contest remains effectively tied as both candidates navigate the fallout from their increasingly personal campaign strategies.
