Republican Group Launches Seven-Figure Ad Buy in Unexpected Mississippi Battleground

Mississippi has emerged as an unexpected battleground during this election cycle, drawing high-profile political figures and a significant financial investment from an outside Republican group.

Senate Leadership Fund, a prominent conservative outside spending organization, has placed a seven-figure ad buy in the state. The group’s newly launched advertisement targets Scott Colom, criticizing him for receiving support from high-profile national Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as Democratic donor George Soros. The spot also attacks Colom for actively campaigning with former Vice President Kamala Harris.

The commercial claims that Colom supports a radical agenda, alleging that he would allow transgender medical procedures for children and permit boys in girls’ bathrooms. In response to these claims, Colom has accused Republicans of distorting his record.

The controversy centers in part on a 2021 letter signed by Colom that condemned ongoing efforts to criminalize transgender people and gender-affirming healthcare across the United States.

The influx of outside spending highlights how the midterm battleground has expanded into traditionally safe territory, even though the investments in Mississippi represent a minor fraction of the massive sums being deployed in major swing states such as Texas, Ohio, and Michigan. Alongside its investment in Mississippi, Senate Leadership Fund is also dedicating resources to defend Republican-held seats in Kansas, South Carolina, and Nebraska, while simultaneously investing in the traditional battleground states that will ultimately decide the balance of the Senate majority.

The financial maneuvers coincide with a flurry of high-level campaign activity in the state. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Mississippi on Monday, while Kamala Harris has been campaigning in the state alongside Colom this week. Additionally, former President Barack Obama recently recorded an endorsement advertisement for Colom, a development first reported by media outlets.
