Patrick Vieira Praises Villarreal Technical Style at 2026 Ballon d’Or Gala

At the 2026 Ballon d’Or gala in London on Monday night, Senegal head coach Patrick Vieira offered a high-profile endorsement of Villarreal CF, placing the Spanish club in the same category as Premier League giants Manchester City and Liverpool. Vieira, a legendary figure in both French and English football, highlighted the “Yellow Submarine” for their specific tactical identity and their ongoing role in developing Senegalese talent.

Speaking at the event, Vieira expressed his deep appreciation for the aesthetic and tactical sides of the modern game. While he noted the high-intensity football played by City and Liverpool in England, he turned his focus to La Liga when discussing stylistic excellence in Spain.

“I love watching football,” Vieira said. “In England, Manchester City or Liverpool play very good football because there is a lot of intensity. In Spain I also like watching Villarreal, because they have Senegalese players and they play very good football.”

Vieira’s comments carry significant weight given his current role leading the Lions of Teranga. Since taking charge of the Senegal national team in August 2025, the Dakar-born coach has been tasked with identifying environments where Senegalese players can thrive at the highest level. His praise for Villarreal suggests the club’s recruitment and development pathways remain a key area of interest for the national team’s technical staff.

Beyond club football, Vieira also lauded the current state of the Spanish national team, which he described as the benchmark for collective play on the international stage. He suggested that Spain’s dominance is a direct result of a philosophy that prioritizes the team unit over individual brilliance, stating that their “collective game” is currently better than the rest of the world.

Vieira’s journey to the Senegal sideline follows a prestigious playing career and a diverse managerial path. Born in Dakar in 1976, he moved to Europe and eventually earned 107 caps for France, winning both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. As the captain of Arsenal’s famous “Invincibles,” he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups, establishing himself as one of the premier midfielders of his generation.

His managerial career has been equally broad, with stints at New York City FC, OGC Nice, Crystal Palace, and Strasbourg. Most recently, he led the Italian side Genoa. His appreciation for Villarreal may be rooted in personal observation from the touchline; on July 31, 2025, shortly before he accepted the Senegal job, his Genoa side defeated Villarreal 3-1 in a 45-minute friendly held during Real Oviedo’s centenary celebrations. Despite the result of that exhibition match, in which Kambwala scored for the Spaniards, the quality of Villarreal’s play under manager Marcelino clearly left a lasting impression on Vieira.

By framing Villarreal alongside the best of the Premier League, Vieira highlighted a club that has maintained its technical integrity while successfully integrating West African talent—an approach that remains central to his vision for the future of Senegalese football.
