Abhishek Sharma Hits Blistering Ton as India Clinch T20I Series Against New Zealand

An aggressive opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi propelled India to a commanding six-wicket victory and a series triumph over New Zealand in Wellington on Tuesday. India sealed the five-match Twenty20 International series with two games to spare, overhauling New Zealand’s total of 198 with ease as they reached the target in just 13.2 overs.
The foundation of the run chase was built on a destructive 133-run opening partnership between Abhishek and Sooryavanshi that came in just 7.1 overs, overwhelming the New Zealand bowling attack from the outset. The onslaught began immediately when Jacob Duffy conceded 26 runs in the opening over, setting a blistering tone that the visitors maintained throughout the powerplay.
Abhishek delivered a masterclass in aggressive batting, striking nine fours and 11 sixes during a sensational 38-ball knock. He received a standing ovation from the crowd when he was eventually dismissed by Kyle Jamieson, by which point India had already stormed to 178-2 in just 10 overs. Reflecting on the record-breaking stand, Abhishek noted that simple execution and mutual enjoyment drove their performance. He observed that during the fielding innings, the pitch offered noticeable extra bounce, which Sooryavanshi capitalized on early to establish crucial momentum.
Sooryavanshi, promoted to open the batting after featuring at number three in the second T20I, complemented his partner aggressively by hitting four fours and four sixes in a brisk 19-ball innings. India captain Shreyas Iyer praised the historic nature of the display, noting that reaching 100 runs within five overs was something he had not previously witnessed at the international level.

Earlier in the match, India won the toss for the third consecutive game and elected to field first. Opening bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh immediately exploited favorable conditions, extracting prodigious seam movement from the pitch and repeatedly beating the outside edges of New Zealand openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen. Singh made the breakthrough by removing Seifert for two after the batsman top-edged an attempted shot.
Daryl Mitchell then joined Allen at the crease, forging an 86-run partnership to steady the innings. Mitchell quickly adapted to the bowling conditions by moving dynamically around the crease to counter the seam movement and punishing any short deliveries with powerful strikes toward the short square boundaries. His counter-attacking innings yielded five fours and five sixes, resulting in 89 runs from 52 balls.
Allen contributed a useful 40 from 25 balls before falling, after which Mitchell found another productive partner in Bevon Jacobs. Jacobs added an unbeaten 39 from 23 deliveries to help push New Zealand to a competitive total of 198, though it ultimately proved insufficient against India’s batting display. The teams will travel to Auckland’s Eden Park for the fourth T20I on Friday.
