LAPD Officer Arrested on Kidnapping Charges After Allegedly Dragging Partner at Gunpoint

A Los Angeles police officer was arrested on Monday afternoon after allegedly forcing his romantic partner out of a residence at gunpoint during a domestic dispute in the San Fernando Valley. The officer, identified as 30-year-old Anthony Gutierrez, is facing a felony charge of kidnapping following the incident in Sylmar.
Gutierrez was off duty at the time of the confrontation, which occurred around 3:00 p.m. at a private residence. According to law enforcement sources familiar with the matter, the dispute escalated when Gutierrez allegedly threatened his partner with a firearm. Unbeknownst to the officer, the woman managed to call 911 to report the emergency while the situation was unfolding.
Witness accounts and law enforcement reports indicate that Gutierrez allegedly dragged the woman out of the home and onto the street while brandishing the weapon. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Mission Division responded to the call and took Gutierrez into custody at the scene without further reported incident. He was subsequently booked on suspicion of kidnapping.
LAPD spokesperson Lt. Elpidio Orozco confirmed the arrest and stated that the department is fully aware of the allegations. The department has declined to provide further specifics regarding the internal details of the confrontation, citing a standard ongoing investigation. Gutierrez’s bail has been set at $150,000.
Internal staffing records reveal that Gutierrez is a relatively recent addition to the force, having joined the LAPD in March 2022. Before his current assignment at the Foothill Division in the San Fernando Valley, he worked within the Newton Division in South Los Angeles. As of Tuesday, Gutierrez had not publicly responded to inquiries regarding the charges.
While the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department maintains the online database for most county jail bookings, Gutierrez’s name did not appear in the public system shortly after his arrest. This typically suggests an individual has been booked into one of the LAPD’s own detention facilities rather than a county-wide jail.
The arrest brings renewed scrutiny to the issue of domestic violence within the ranks of law enforcement. Historically, the LAPD has faced criticism for its handling of domestic abuse allegations against its officers, with past independent reports suggesting that internal investigations into such matters have occasionally been insufficient.
More recently, the department has navigated challenges related to state transparency and reporting requirements. A department official previously acknowledged during a private hearing that the agency had underreported misdemeanor domestic abuse allegations following the passage of a California law that mandates reporting and can lead to permanent bans from police work for those convicted. The investigation into the incident involving Gutierrez remains active as prosecutors determine the final filing of charges.
