Mumbai Indians Name Kieron Pollard Head Coach for 2027 IPL Season

Mumbai Indians (MI) have officially appointed franchise icon Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 39-year-old Trinidadian, who has spent sixteen years with the organization as both a player and a specialist coach, takes the helm at a pivotal moment as the team looks to reclaim its position at the top of the league standings.
Pollard’s promotion from batting coach to the top leadership role follows a period of uncharacteristic struggle for the five-time champions. While the franchise reached the playoffs in 2023 and 2025, they suffered significant setbacks in other recent campaigns, finishing tenth in 2024 and ninth in 2026. The decision to elevate Pollard suggests a desire for leadership that understands the internal culture and historical success of the “Blue and Gold.”
“It is an honor to take on the role of head coach of Mumbai Indians,” Pollard said in a statement released by the team. “MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players, and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold.”
Pollard’s playing legacy with Mumbai is foundational to the team’s history. He joined the squad as a 22-year-old in 2010 and remained a one-franchise player in the IPL until his retirement from the league in 2022. Across 189 games, he scored 3,412 runs and claimed 69 wickets, serving as a critical component in each of the team’s five title-winning seasons in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
Nita Ambani, co-owner of Mumbai Indians, expressed high confidence in the appointment, noting Pollard’s deep roots within the organization. “As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion, and deep understanding of the game,” she said. “I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief, and determination to this role.”
The new head coach faces an immediate and demanding schedule. His first major responsibility will be finalizing the team’s retention list, which must be submitted by a November 15 deadline. This strategic groundwork will lead directly into the IPL 2027 auction, which is expected to take place in Goa approximately one month later.
Pollard’s influence also continues to span the global network of franchises under the same ownership. He currently serves as the head coach of MI London in The Hundred and has had playing stints with MI New York in Major League Cricket, MI Cape Town in the SA20, and MI Emirates in the ILT20.
Notably, while he remains a central figure in the MI coaching hierarchy, Pollard continues to maintain an active playing career in other T20 circuits. In the upcoming season of the SA20, he will represent the Joburg Super Kings—who acquired him at auction earlier this month after no rival bid was made by his former side, MI Cape Town. He also continues to play for his home team, the Trinbago Knight Riders, in the Caribbean Premier League.
