Ukraine Announces Full Restoration of Starlink Speeds After Two-Week Restriction

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday that the high-speed connectivity of the Starlink satellite system has been fully restored across the country. The restoration follows a two-week period of significant restrictions that hampered the military’s ability to conduct drone operations and coordinate logistical support for front-line troops.

In a statement released by the ministry, officials confirmed that monitoring systems are now showing stable connectivity and high-speed data transfers. The ministry specifically noted that they are recording speeds exceeding 400 kilometers per hour in operational contexts, a metric vital for the functionality of high-speed reconnaissance and interceptor drones. The return to full capacity follows what Kyiv described as “direct dialogue” and a “firm stance at the highest level” taken by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

For the past 14 days, the restricted speeds created a tactical bottleneck for Ukrainian forces. The military relies heavily on the Elon Musk-owned Starlink system to operate drones used to intercept incoming Russian attack aircraft and for the intelligence-gathering drones that provide real-time battlefield awareness. Beyond offensive and defensive maneuvers, the connectivity issues had prevented the military from using its fleet of drones to deliver critical supplies to soldiers positioned in isolated areas of the front lines.

Ukraine’s military infrastructure utilizes two distinct satellite frameworks. The first is Starlink, the commercial system owned by SpaceX, which is used primarily for ground force communications, logistics, and defensive drone operations—specifically those tasked with neutralizing incoming threats. The second is Starshield, a system controlled by the United States government designed for offensive military applications. Both systems were reportedly affected during the recent period of degraded service.

The service interruption sat at the center of a burgeoning diplomatic crisis involving the Ukrainian government and the incoming Trump administration. President Zelensky had expressed concerns that the restrictions were a form of retaliation by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, purportedly triggered by Ukraine’s refusal to cease strikes against Russian oil refineries. The situation prompted bipartisan criticism in Washington and sparked a public dispute over who was responsible for the connectivity issues.

President Trump denied any White House involvement in the restrictions. Throughout the crisis, the president had suggested the system was already operational, despite reports from the ground in Ukraine to the contrary. On Friday, Trump denied having spoken directly to Musk about the specific service issues, though he stated that he would intervene and speak with the SpaceX CEO if the restrictions were found to be ongoing.

The resolution of the matter appears to have eased immediate tensions, though the ministry did not disclose the specific terms of the dialogue that led to the restoration. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense emphasized that stable and high-speed satellite communications remain a cornerstone of their defensive strategy, particularly as they continue to face sustained pressure from Russian drone strikes and long-range engagements. With connectivity restored, the military is expected to resume full reconnaissance and supply operations immediately.
