Utah Jazz Guard Keyonte George Emphasizes Focus Ahead of Home Opener

The Utah Jazz returned to the practice floor to address glaring deficiencies following a lopsided season-opening defeat, turning their attention toward Friday night’s home opener against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Delta Center.

Utah opened the regular season Wednesday with a 123-103 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, a contest marked by stark statistical disadvantages. The Jazz were outrebounded 55-38, surrendered 15 offensive rebounds, and allowed Memphis to attempt 18 more shots from the floor. Compounding the rebounding struggles, a center rotation featuring Jaxson Hayes, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Kyle Filipowski combined for 10 boards. Head coach Will Hardy emphasized the critical importance of winning the possession battle after the game concluded.

Beyond the struggles on the glass, Utah committed 18 turnovers and failed to contain Memphis guard Ty Jerome, who erupted for a career-high 45 points. The defensive breakdowns prompted an immediate review of game film, where coaches and players zeroed in on core issues including defensive communication, switching assignments, and strict adherence to coverage schemes.

Speaking to reporters after Friday morning’s shootaround—where he remained on the floor to put up extra shots alongside rookie Darryn Peterson and team trainers—guard Keyonte George acknowledged that the squad faces a demanding development curve. The team’s primary objective moving forward centers entirely on concentration over the full course of a regulation game.

“The obvious thing was, we got some ways to go,” George said. “Offensively, we’re going to figure it out. Defensively, our communication has to go up.”

George noted that the team’s guiding principle for the campaign centers on sustained attention. Establishing that consistency during high-stress stretches, such as the third quarter when Memphis made its decisive push on opening night, will define the roster’s identity as the season progresses. When adversity strikes, George stressed the necessity for the group to fight back regardless of the final scoreboard outcome.

To fortify the frontcourt ahead of the matchup with New Orleans, the Jazz received a welcome addition on the injury report. Big man Tony Bradley was listed as available after recovering from a left quad issue, providing much-needed depth while center Jusuf Nurkić remains sidelined.

Off the court, George pointed to the strong bonds forged during away-from-the-facility gatherings as a catalyst for team chemistry. That cohesion will be tested as George and Peterson continue to gel in the backcourt rotation.

For George, the anticipation surrounding the team’s first appearance in front of the Salt Lake City faithful carries personal weight. Acknowledging the loyal fan base that has supported the franchise through challenging stretches, George emphasized the players’ determination to defend their home court.

“They’ve showed up since I’ve been here. Through the ups, the downs, through the ugly,” George said. “They’ve stayed and watched from the first quarter all the way to the end of the game. I think for us, that means something.”

“Every time we got a home game, man, it’s hard for me to sleep at night,” George added. “I’m just ready to get out there.”
