Jaguars Star Travis Hunter Details the Exhausting Prep Behind Playing Two Ways

Jacksonville Jaguars standout Travis Hunter has opened up about the grueling mental and physical preparation required to maintain a rare two-way role in professional football.
Through the opening six games of his second campaign with the Jacksonville franchise, Hunter has established himself as a versatile contributor on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Operating primarily as a starting cornerback, the former No. 2 overall selection has tallied 22 tackles, six passes defended, and two interceptions. Simultaneously, he contributes on offense as a wide receiver, hauling in six receptions for 76 yards and scoring one touchdown.
Appearing on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s podcast titled “Chasing No 1,” Hunter discussed the hidden complexities of balancing offensive and defensive game plans. Despite making his dual-threat responsibilities appear effortless on the field, the young star acknowledged the intense behind-the-scenes workload demanded by the coaching staff.
Detailing his pre-practice routine, Hunter explained the tight schedule he maintains before full-squad sessions begin. Approximately 45 minutes to an hour before the primary team meeting, he reviews offensive concepts and conducts walk-throughs with the offensive unit, in addition to studying film. Following the general team gathering, he transitions immediately to defensive preparation.

The mental burden of mastering two entirely different playbooks presents a persistent hurdle. Hunter noted that comprehending every individual route, team formation, and tactical concept across both units requires immense concentration, admitting that the volume of information frequently complicates his on-field reads.
Following a bye week during Week 7, Hunter and the Jaguars have utilized the extended break to prepare for an upcoming divisional matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Sunday’s contest is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. ET.
