Golden State Warriors Face Early Season Struggles Amid Center Shortages

The Golden State Warriors are grappling with an acute shortage of size in the paint as early-season losses compound roster concerns. Following a difficult defeat, former Warriors guard Seth Curry took to social media to highlight the team’s predicament after the organization announced that two-way player Graham Ike would be inserted into the starting lineup for a game against the Grizzlies.

With all due respect to Ike, a two-way player starting in just the second game of the season illustrates the roster constraints facing the franchise. Curry, whose own tenure with Golden State was limited to 10 games last season due to injuries, pointed out the tough reality of the team’s frontcourt depth.

The roster vulnerabilities at the center position stem from a combination of unexpected departures, injuries, and veteran management. Kristaps Porzingis abruptly cut ties with the organization, while big man Charles Bassey remains sidelined with injuries. Additionally, Al Horford is being held out of back-to-back games to manage ongoing back issues.

To address the sudden void, the Warriors turned to Ike, a 6-foot-9 undrafted rookie out of Gonzaga who signed a two-way deal with the team on September 22. Making his first start against Memphis, Ike recorded a team-low plus-minus of -16 but managed to contribute offensively by hitting two 3-pointers and finishing with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

Early results in the new campaign have exposed deep concerns about the team’s lack of interior size and the persistent question of supporting star guard Stephen Curry. The Warriors opened the season with a lopsided loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles, where newly acquired Los Angeles big man Walker Kessler dominated by shooting 12-for-12 from the field, including 10 dunks.

Golden State appeared poised to secure a victory in their home opener against Memphis, holding a 12-point lead before collapsing in the fourth quarter. The offense went 0-9 from the field in the final three minutes, resulting in a narrow 111-108 defeat.

The schedule offers little respite as the team prepares to face the Suns on the second night of a home back-to-back. Compounding the challenge, the Warriors will play without Stephen Curry, Al Horford, and Brandin Podziemski, while veteran forward Draymond Green is listed as doubtful for the matchup.
