Irish European Athletics Champion Ciara Mageean Dies at 34

Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, who claimed a historic European gold medal and competed at two Olympic Games, has died at the age of 34, her family has announced.

In a statement posted to the athlete’s Instagram account on Sunday, her family shared that she passed away at 6:30 a.m. surrounded by her loved ones after losing her battle with cancer. Her death comes just weeks after she married her long-term partner in Belfast.

Mageean had been undergoing treatment for bowel cancer since publicly revealing her diagnosis in July 2025, later disclosing that the disease had reached an advanced stage. Originally hailing from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, she established herself as one of the island’s most accomplished middle-distance competitors, setting multiple national records across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Throughout her career, Mageean represented the Republic of Ireland at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2021 Tokyo Games. Her crowning athletic achievement came in 2024, when she captured the 1,500-meter title at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. However, an Achilles tendon injury subsequently forced her to withdraw from the Paris Olympics later that same year.

In addition to her 2024 gold, Mageean secured European bronze in 2016 and silver in 2022 in the 1,500-meter event, and claimed a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games competing for Northern Ireland.

Despite her diagnosis, Mageean maintained a positive outlook throughout her illness. In June, she told broadcasters that she was grateful for a career that many others never get to experience, expressing appreciation for finding joy in everyday moments and thanking the public for their sustained support.

Tributes quickly followed from political and sporting leaders across the island. The Olympic Federation of Ireland stated that the country had lost a hero. Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill remarked that beyond the medals and records, Mageean would be remembered for her warmth, courage, and strength of character. Taoiseach Micheal Martin, the prime minister of the Republic of Ireland, said he was deeply saddened by her untimely passing.
