College Football Power Rankings: Big Ten Fades As SEC Resurgence Takes Hold

The shifting landscape of college football has brought a striking reversal to the national hierarchy. For the past three seasons, powerhouse programs from Michigan, Ohio State, and Indiana hoisted the national championship trophy, while the SEC saw its decades-long dominance questioned. Yet as the season progresses into November, the SEC has bounced back forcefully, boasting roughly 10 teams worthy of Top 25 consideration. Meanwhile, the Big Ten finds itself with only three or four contenders—Indiana, Ohio State, UCLA, and potentially USC or Iowa—raising questions about whether any conference team currently merits a spot in the top 15 based on its complete body of work.

Indiana has managed to survive close conference battles, escaping Minnesota in overtime after a wild sequence featuring back-to-back 60-yard field goals, following similar narrow escapes against Michigan and Northwestern. However, the Hoosiers lack the dominant form they displayed a year ago. Elsewhere in the conference, Ohio State has largely looked pedestrian despite beating Indiana, and questions persist around the offense following an early-season transition at quarterback from Julian Sayin to freshman Luke Fahey. Meanwhile, USC rebounded from an abysmal 24-7 loss at Wisconsin—where the Trojans rushed for negative 17 yards—by dominating at the Coliseum under head coach Lincoln Riley, though sustaining that momentum remains a challenge.

Non-conference records further illustrate the changing power dynamics among major conferences. The SEC posted a strong 10-2 record against Power Four opponents this season, contrasted with the ACC at 6-9, the Big 12 at 5-7, and the Big Ten trailing at 4-7, or 4-10 when including Notre Dame. Analysts suggest the Big Ten now resembles a two-bid playoff league at best, sitting closer in overall strength to the ACC than to the SEC.

In the SEC, Georgia asserted its dominance with a 24-0 halftime lead over Florida, fueled by four turnovers and 217 rushing yards. Florida, despite losses, has shown promise under Jon Sumrall with victories over Texas and Ole Miss. South Carolina also turned heads by racking up 521 total yards in a dominant win at Oklahoma, pushing the Sooners under increased scrutiny alongside Texas A&M regarding high-priced rosters facing difficult finishes.

Out West, Utah and UCLA both preserved their undefeated records, with Utah navigating a challenging road win ahead of the annual rivalry matchup against BYU. In the ACC, North Carolina showed significant improvement under its new coaching era, nearly upsetting Miami before falling short in a game featuring two overturned onside kick recoveries. Miami now faces a crucial matchup against Notre Dame, with playoff implications extending across multiple conferences.

Examining conference expansion and long-term viability, critics argue that the Big Ten’s past additions of schools like Maryland and Rutgers prioritized major television markets over traditional football brands, whereas the SEC successfully focused on established athletic brands that generate broader national television audiences. As the playoff picture crystallizes, the SEC appears poised to secure five or six postseason bids, proving that reports of the conference’s decline were greatly exaggerated.
