Jintimani Kalita Debuts as India Faces Zimbabwe in Historic First Women’s ODI

India’s women’s cricket team entered a new era on Tuesday at the Kotambi Stadium, marking two significant milestones simultaneously: the start of their ICC Women’s Championship cycle and their first-ever One-Day International encounter against Zimbabwe. The match, which officially begins the qualifying journey toward the 2029 ODI World Cup, saw Zimbabwe captain Nomvelo Sibanda win the toss and elect to bowl first. Captain Smriti Mandhana noted that the surface at Kotambi was a red-soil pitch, a distinct change from the black-soil surfaces utilized at the venue during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) earlier this year.
The headlines for the Indian side focused on the debut of seam-bowling allrounder Jintimani Kalita. A familiar face to domestic fans following her stints with the Mumbai Indians in the 2023 and 2025 WPL seasons, Kalita received her maiden ODI cap from former captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Her inclusion follows a call-up as a replacement for frontline seamer Renuka Singh. According to a statement from the BCCI, Singh was omitted from this fixture as she continues to build up the specific bowling volume required for the 50-over format.
The Indian middle order also required adjustments due to injury. With Jemimah Rodrigues sidelined, Maharashtra batter Tejal Hasabnis was slotted into the No. 5 position. Pratika Rawal was pencilled in to bat at No. 3, offering an additional off-spin option to the attack alongside Shafali Verma. In the spin department, the team management selected N Shree Charani as the preferred left-arm spinner over Vaishnavi Sharma, joining vice-captain Deepti Sharma as a frontline slow-bowling option.
This fixture represents India’s first appearance in the ODI format since February 2026 and is only the second series the team has contested since their maiden World Cup victory last year. For Zimbabwe, the match serves as a high-stakes introduction to the new championship cycle against the defending champions.
India’s playing XI includes Smriti Mandhana (capt), Shafali Verma, Pratika Rawal, Harmanpreet Kaur, Tejal Hasabnis, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (wk), N Shree Charani, Jintimani Kalita, Sayali Satghare, and Kranti Gaud.
Zimbabwe took the field with Beloved Biza, Sharne Mayers, Modester Mupachikwa (wk), Chiedza Dhuru, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, Michelle Mavunga, Nyasha Gwanzura, Tendai Makusha, Nomvelo Sibanda (capt), Loryn Phiri, and Olinder Chare.
