Ilhan Omar Shares Social Media Video Set to Somali Track Following Federal Investigation

Representative Ilhan Omar posted a video on social media featuring herself walking beside a Minnesota lake with her husband, Tim Mynett, set to a Somali rap song with lyrics about confronting enemies. The 27-second clip was published on Friday with the caption “Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes.” The caption did not mention political figures or identify a target for the music.

The background track, titled “Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya,” is performed by Somali rapper Ilkacase Qays and singer Hodan Abdirahman. A certified English translation of the lyrics includes lines about teaching opponents a lesson and making them suffer, with passages declaring that no enemy dares to threaten the singer.

Omar has previous ties to the musicians featured in the track. Video footage uploaded to YouTube shows her singing and dancing with Qays and Abdirahman at a gathering in May, and she was also filmed dancing alongside Qays at the Somali Global Awards in Minneapolis in June.

The social media post followed a court-authorized search of Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on October 12 by Homeland Security Investigations agents. The Justice Department confirmed the search as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation examining whether Omar or her late father provided inaccurate information on immigration documents.

Federal investigators are reviewing questions regarding her birth date and whether she qualified to obtain citizenship through her father’s naturalization in 2000. Omar has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to the inquiry. A court filing referred to her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, also known as Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, though that phrasing does not establish allegations regarding her marital history, which she has repeatedly denied.

Political figures have responded to the ongoing legal scrutiny. Speaking at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, former President Donald Trump argued that House Speaker Mike Johnson should be informed of the court filing and suggested that Omar should leave Congress.
