Why Global Marathons Are Experiencing an Unprecedented Surge in Popularity

The marathon remains a grueling test of endurance, where months of grueling preparation culminate in triumph or heartbreak. Participants frequently remind newcomers that the race owes them nothing, capable as it is of punishing even the most meticulously trained athletes. Yet despite the physical toll, participation numbers and overall speeds are climbing rapidly across the globe.

Major endurance events are witnessing unprecedented demand. For next year’s London Marathon, 1.3 million individuals applied for entry, representing a massive surge from the 578,000 applicants recorded just three years prior. Similarly, the New York City Marathon experienced a nearly 20 percent increase in lottery entries this year compared to the previous year, leaving hundreds of thousands of hopefuls without a bib. Only a small fraction of applicants successfully secure entry through the lottery, while others qualify through exceptionally fast finishing times.

This modern running boom traces its roots back to the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when countless individuals took up or returned to the sport as a solitary outlet. In the years since, localized run clubs have emerged as a powerful engine driving continued participation. Particularly popular among younger demographics, these community groups have transformed running from an isolated pursuit into a social hub where sweating side-by-side frequently sparks deep friendships and romantic connections.

Beyond sheer participation numbers, both elite and recreational runners are clocking faster times than ever before. As millions more vie for spots in marquee races, the culture surrounding long-distance running continues to evolve, cementing the marathon’s status as one of the world’s most sought-after athletic challenges.
