German Youth Protests Erupt Across Cities Over Living Costs

Tens of thousands of young people were expected to take to the streets across more than thirty cities in Germany for nationwide demonstrations organized by the youth movement known as ‘GenZ regelt’, or ‘GenZ takes charge’. Police forces were deployed nationwide in anticipation of the protests, while some commercial establishments barricaded their storefronts as a precaution.

The demonstrations form part of a broader wave of youth activism seen across several European countries, including France and Italy, where younger generations have voiced deep frustration with political elites whom they accuse of ignoring their core concerns. In Germany, the movement’s grievances span a wide range of socioeconomic and political issues, including the soaring cost of living, the deteriorating physical condition of educational facilities, ongoing budget cuts, and broader decision-making processes that participants argue fail to account for youth welfare.

‘The situation of young people is precarious and, yet, they are still not heard,’ said Veronika Dinter, a spokesperson for the movement. ‘The institutions censées préparer les jeunes à la vie sont privées de moyens,’ she added, noting that institutions meant to prepare youth for life are being deprived of resources. Demonstrators have also raised sharp objections to surging military expenditures and a newly introduced voluntary service scheme designed to boost armed forces personnel, expressing fears that the initiative could pave the way for the reinstatement of conscription. Earlier reports from January noted that young Germans face restricted employment prospects and stagnant incomes.

Authorities expressed apprehension that the rallies, coinciding with Halloween, could encounter unrest comparable to disturbances witnessed in other European nations. Berlin maintained communication with law enforcement counterparts in France and Italy amid concerns that radical activists from abroad might travel to join the German demonstrations. However, security officials stated they had detected no concrete intelligence indicating planned acts of violence.

Organizers for ‘GenZ regelt’ moved to distance themselves from potential agitators, issuing a statement asserting that extremist factions, unconstitutional symbols, racism, and hate speech have no place within their ranks, regardless of political affiliation.
