From Essex Law Offices to Global Streaming Star: Emily McGonagle’s Voice Acting Journey

Emily McGonagle was on maternity leave from her demanding London legal job, juggling the care of her newborn and toddler son in Colchester, when a daily routine of television cartoons sparked an unlikely career ambition. Watching favorites like Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol, the 42-year-old mother found herself wondering about the people behind the animated characters. McGonagle, who commuted to her legal practice and sought a more flexible work-life balance, had always enjoyed school plays and possessed a talent for accents, prompting her to research how to break into voice acting.

A decade later, McGonagle voices eight distinct characters in the animated series Spike, which follows a young dragon and his friends. After launching on Netflix on October 12, the programme quickly surged to become the seventh-most-watched show globally across any genre. Reflecting on her career trajectory, McGonagle described the recent weeks as a whirlwind and very surreal, noting her amazement at seeing Spike listed in the top ten alongside Peppa Pig.

Initial research revealed that professional audio equipment and proper training would allow her to work from home rather than a dedicated recording studio. With backing from her husband, Ciarán, she transformed a large wardrobe into a soundproofed vocal booth and began auditioning for online voiceover work. Her early credits included corporate training videos, television and radio commercials, and voice work for a Formula One-themed go-kart ride.

Despite branching into various commercial projects, McGonagle maintained her ambition to work in children’s animation, taking local drama classes and specialized courses in voice acting for animation. Her breakthrough on Spike began when she discovered the project advertised on LinkedIn by its Lithuanian animation studio. Originally distributed on YouTube, the series gained substantial popularity among preschool parents before securing its global Netflix distribution.

Voicing multiple roles within the same production requires distinct preparation. McGonagle, who has provided voices for 20 characters in the video game Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, establishes specific backgrounds for her roles. To bring each character to life, she writes personal biographies detailing their appearance, age, origin, and backstory, while adjusting her voice and physical delivery to alter age or accent. Her eight characters in Spike include the main character’s mother, a female giraffe, a male elephant, and a canine police officer, featuring a mix of English and American accents based on her original audition choices.

The production operates entirely remotely across an international team. Cast members collaborate via Zoom calls and maintain individual home studios, meaning none of the actors have met in person.

Meanwhile, McGonagle’s sons, Finn and Jack, are now 11 and nine years old—well past preschool animation age. Although her unusual career path surrounds them, their reaction remains understated. McGonagle noted that even when she practiced character voices around the house or attempted animated reading during bedtime stories when they were younger, her sons would routinely ask her to stop, proving unimpressed by her professional vocal talents.
