DoorDash Agrees to Acquire Instacart in Massive $17 Billion Merger

Food delivery giant DoorDash announced Thursday that it has reached an agreement to acquire Instacart for $17 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, DoorDash will pay $65 per share for Instacart, bringing together one of the country’s leading grocery delivery platforms with a major restaurant and food delivery network.
Executives behind the transaction emphasized the complementary nature of the two companies’ operations. Tony Xu, co-founder and chief executive officer of DoorDash, pointed to Instacart’s specialized experience in powering online storefronts for grocers alongside DoorDash’s established logistics infrastructure.
“Instacart has spent years learning to do that well for grocers, while DoorDash has built a delivery network and technology that local stores rely on every day,” Xu said in a statement. “Together, we could give stores of every size more of those tools and unlock the potential of grocery delivery.”
DoorDash stated that the acquisition will offer broad advantages for both local merchants and consumers. Communities and supermarkets are expected to benefit by utilizing Instacart’s platform to operate their websites, while shoppers will gain access to an expanded selection of stores, faster delivery speeds, and local savings opportunities.
The high-stakes transaction arrives as consumer habits continue shifting away from traditional brick-and-mortar shopping toward digital applications for weekly household provisioning. Data from Capital One indicates that nearly 150 million Americans engaged in online grocery shopping as of 2025.
Regulatory and corporate procedures remain ahead before the combination becomes official. DoorDash noted that both companies will continue operating as separate, independent entities until the merger is formally finalized, a milestone projected to occur in late 2027 or early 2028.
Following the completion of the deal, DoorDash indicated that it intends to preserve Instacart’s distinct brand identity, proprietary technology, and standalone consumer application.
