Convicted Murderer Escapes Tennessee Prison and Steals Truck, Sparking Manhunt

A man serving a life sentence for first-degree murder has escaped from a correctional facility in northwest Tennessee, prompting an extensive manhunt by state and local law enforcement agencies. Authorities confirmed that 28-year-old Jacob Morley managed to slip through a fence at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville.

Officials with the Tennessee Department of Correction stated that staff discovered Morley was unaccounted for during a late check at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Review of facility security footage revealed that Morley fled the prison grounds while still wearing his standard prison uniform. Investigators have not yet publicly disclosed the specific mechanism or details regarding how he managed to breach or bypass the security fence.

The search broadened significantly when the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released additional surveillance footage. The tape captured Morley stealing a white 2008 Ford F-350 truck equipped with Tennessee license plates and bearing a Lindamood Planting Company logo on the door. The theft occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday within Lake County, the same rural county where the prison is situated.

Following the vehicle theft, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation placed Morley on its “most wanted” list and offered a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information directly resulting in his apprehension. Authorities have issued public appeals urging residents living in and around the area where the vehicle was stolen to inspect residential security systems, including doorbell cameras and trail cameras, for any visual evidence of Morley or the stolen Ford truck.

Law enforcement personnel from multiple jurisdictions have scoured outbuildings, vacant structures, and rural terrain surrounding the prison facility. The Northwest Correctional Complex is located roughly 90 miles north of Memphis, positioned within an isolated, flat rural landscape tucked near a sharp bend of the Mississippi River close to the Missouri border. Officials describe Morley as standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 240 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.

Morley was originally convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2022 killing of his co-worker, Cody Birchfield. Birchfield’s remains were discovered hidden inside a box beneath Morley’s residence in Carter County after the victim had been reported missing for several weeks. In addition to the first-degree murder conviction, a court found Morley guilty of aggravated burglary, tampering with physical evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest. The 2022 apprehension involved a high-speed vehicle pursuit that began when deputies arrived at Morley’s home and terminated across state lines in North Carolina.

The escape occurs against a backdrop of ongoing scrutiny surrounding conditions and oversight at the Northwest Correctional Complex. The facility, which has a maximum capacity of 1,776 male inmates and can house minors tried as adults, has experienced multiple documented incidents of violence in recent years involving both inmate-on-inmate altercations and assaults on staff. A local grand jury returned dozens of indictments in July stemming from five inmate homicides, staff assaults, and related violence inside the institution.

Furthermore, operational challenges at the facility have been highlighted by state oversight. A 2023 legislative audit of Tennessee’s correctional system revealed severe staffing shortages across the department, noting that the Northwest Correctional Complex struggled significantly with recruitment and retention, recording a 61 percent vacancy rate for correctional officer positions during that fiscal year.
