Broadcom Upgraded to Buy as Anthropic IPO Filing Reassures AI Chip Investors

Broadcom Inc. received a significant vote of confidence on Tuesday as market analysts upgraded the semiconductor giant from Neutral to Buy, citing new evidence that the artificial intelligence infrastructure cycle is far from reaching its peak. The upgrade follows a detailed review of recent regulatory filings from Anthropic, a key player in the generative AI space and a major customer for Broadcom’s custom silicon business.

Analyst Gil Luria raised the price target for Broadcom shares to $400, up from a previous target of $350. The optimistic shift is largely predicated on Anthropic’s S-1 registration statement, which provides a rare window into the financial scale and strategic commitments of the high-profile AI startup. The filing suggests that Anthropic’s planned initial public offering (IPO) is on track to proceed, which would allow the company to secure the massive capital reserves necessary to sustain its hardware demands.

A primary concern for Broadcom investors in recent months has been the company’s heavy reliance on a small group of hyper-scale AI companies. Both Anthropic and OpenAI are positioned to become Broadcom’s largest customers for custom AI chips—application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) tailored for processing massive neural networks. Market skepticism regarding the long-term viability and spending power of these startups had created an overhang on Broadcom’s stock price in recent weeks.

However, the Anthropic filing revealed substantial financial resources, including $131 billion in cash and equivalents. More importantly for Broadcom, the disclosures detailed a $161 billion scale for the relationship between the two companies. Anthropic’s gross margins on net revenue are holding at approximately 50%, a figure analysts described as healthy enough to justify its current growth trajectory and capital expenditures.

The successful advancement of an Anthropic IPO is viewed as a bellwether for the entire sector. DA Davidson expects that if Anthropic successfully raises capital through the public markets, it will clear the path for OpenAI to pursue its own IPO, potentially as early as next year. Such a sequence would provide Broadcom with the visibility and financial backing needed to meet aggressive growth expectations over the next two to three years.

From a valuation standpoint, Broadcom appears increasingly attractive compared to the broader AI semiconductor landscape. The stock currently trades at roughly 16 times its projected 2027 earnings per share (EPS). In contrast, many other companies in the AI chip sector are trading at multiples between 20 and 40 times earnings. Luria highlighted a dislocation in the market, noting that Broadcom, along with Nvidia and Micron, is trading at a significant discount despite being foundational to the AI ecosystem.

The analysis suggests that the fortunes of the top-tier hardware providers are intrinsically linked. It is considered unlikely that secondary semiconductor companies would continue to perform well if leaders like Nvidia, Micron, and Broadcom were to struggle. By upgrading Broadcom, analysts are signaling that the current market pricing undervalues the probability of successful IPOs and continued infrastructure spending by the world’s leading AI developers.
