Canada Acquires Equity Stake in Toronto AI Startup

Canada is acquiring an equity stake of up to $1.1 billion in a Toronto-based artificial intelligence startup, marking a major strategic move as Washington’s international allies intensify efforts to reduce their technological reliance on the United States.
Ottawa’s financial maneuver mirrors parallel policy shifts underway in the United Kingdom. British finance officials recently pledged to pursue a distinctively domestic approach to artificial intelligence development, highlighted by a newly announced $80 billion sovereign AI fund designed to bolster homegrown firms within Europe’s largest technology sector.

Alongside the sovereign fund initiative, Downing Street has outlined plans to inject an additional $160 million into a government laboratory dedicated to testing the world’s most advanced frontier artificial intelligence models. That funding level represents roughly ten times the annual budget allocated to its American counterpart, even as recent polling indicates that a significant majority of voters in U.S. swing states strongly support government-led safety testing for emerging technologies.
