Arkane Studios Faces November Deadline as Microsoft Seeks Buyer for Lyon Operations

Arkane Studios is facing a critical mid-November deadline as the consultation process surrounding its proposed closure moves forward, with multiple potential takeover options reportedly under active consideration. The studio, which Microsoft announced plans to divest in July, must navigate a mandatory consultation timeline that culminates on November 13 with the conclusion of discussions alongside the company’s Social and Economic Committee.

The search for an external buyer was initiated in mid-summer under France’s Florange Law, a statutory requirement that mandates companies with a workforce of at least 1,000 employees to actively search for a prospective buyer when planning closures that involve large-scale layoffs. The current process places approximately 217 jobs at risk at the Lyon-based studio, which is widely recognized for developing acclaimed titles such as Dishonored and Deathloop.

Details of the ongoing negotiations emerged through reporting from French publication Le Monde, which cited information provided by a union representative from Printemps Ecologique, the sole representative trade union for Arkane Studios. While the studio itself has not directly issued comprehensive public statements regarding the daily proceedings of the sale, Microsoft confirmed to the publication that corporate leadership is actively engaged in finding a partner to support the next operational phase and facilitate the commercialization of Marvel’s Blade.

Announced in 2023, Marvel’s Blade is currently nearing the final stages of production. Representatives from Printemps Ecologique characterized the prospect of the game going unreleased as a monumental waste of development effort. Similarly, the Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Video, a French video game workers union, expressed strong pride in the completed work and voiced confidence that the title would achieve commercial success if brought to market.

Additional perspective on the negotiations indicates that the studio’s closure is not yet a certainty. Industry reporting from journalist Jason Schreier noted that multiple distinct paths are actively being explored to secure a future for Arkane Lyon. While negotiations remain fluid and outcomes can shift before formal agreements are finalized, industry observers have suggested that the studio may ultimately avoid outright closure as prospective buyers evaluate the viability of taking over operations and the remaining game assets.
