Aston Villa Stuns Arsenal at Half-Time as WSL Action Heats Up

Aston Villa held a shock 1-0 lead over Arsenal at half-time in Sunday’s Women’s Super League encounter after weathering heavy pressure from the hosts at the Emirates Stadium. Despite controlling possession and creating numerous chances, Arsenal found themselves trailing following a clinical counter-attack in the 24th minute.
Dutch forward Chasity Grant broke the deadlock for Villa when she was released down the right flank. After cleverly maneuvering past defensive cover, Grant unleashed a low shot that deflected off defender Steph Catley and into the far corner, marking her second league goal of the season. The strike came completely against the run of play after Arsenal had dominated the opening exchanges.

Arsenal created multiple scoring opportunities before and after the goal. Alessia Russo proved a constant threat, curling a bending shot just past the far post and linking up effectively with Caitlin Foord down the left. Foord squandered a golden chance early on, hitting a weak shot straight at the goalkeeper following an excellent layoff from Russo. Kyra Cooney-Cross also came close for the Gunners, firing a late long-range effort just wide during two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half.
Villa’s defensive resilience, anchored by Mathilde Harviken and goalkeeper Okuma, successfully frustrated Renée Slegers’ side. Arsenal entered the match seeking a third consecutive victory following a derby win against Tottenham and a 3-0 Champions League triumph over Benfica featuring a Russo hat-trick.

Meanwhile, in Sunday’s other early kick-off, the London City Lionesses reached half-time level at 0-0 against joint-leaders Manchester City at Hayes Lane in Bromley. The match featured recent three-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas in the starting line-up for London City, a side currently sitting third in the top flight under businesswoman Michele Kang and chief executive Martin Semmens. Spectators at the Bromley venue also noted color-matching kit similarities between the two teams, with a supporter pointing out that only the socks distinguished the light green and white strips.
The afternoon’s WSL schedule also features 2pm fixtures including Birmingham City against Tottenham, West Ham hosting Liverpool, and Brighton facing Crystal Palace, followed by Charlton against Chelsea at 2.30pm.
