New York Giants Sign Veteran Defensive Tackle Dean Lowry to Practice Squad

The New York Giants have officially moved to bolster their interior defensive line, signing veteran defensive tackle Dean Lowry to the team’s practice squad. The move, confirmed by team sources, concludes a weeks-long period of speculation linking the two parties and adds a significant veteran presence to the Giants’ defensive front.

Lowry, 32, is a 6-foot-6, 296-pound tackle who brings nearly a decade of NFL experience to East Rutherford. A former fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Lowry spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers. His extensive resume includes 132 regular-season appearances and 85 starts, making him one of the most experienced defensive interior players currently in the Giants’ system.

Following his lengthy tenure in Green Bay, Lowry spent a season with the Minnesota Vikings and subsequently joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. His most recent stint in Pittsburgh was marred by injury; he spent the previous season on the Injured Reserve list after suffering a torn ACL during training camp. His recovery and availability became a point of interest for the Giants as they looked to stabilize their defensive depth.

Internal interest in Lowry reportedly began as early as September. While a deal did not materialize at the beginning of the regular season, the Giants remained in contact with the veteran as they evaluated their defensive interior. The team has been searching for reliable veteran help to support their current rotation, which has leaned heavily on several younger, less experienced prospects during the first half of the season.

Currently, the Giants’ defensive tackle rotation includes a trio of developing players: Darius Alexander, Bobby Jamison-Travis, and C.J. Okoye. Okoye, who joined the NFL through the International Player Pathway program, and his fellow young teammates have handled significant responsibilities, but the addition of Lowry provides a proven professional who can bridge the experience gap.

Lowry’s transition to the practice squad serves as a strategic move for the Giants, allowing him to integrate into the defensive system while providing a safety net for the active roster. Given his history as a reliable starter and his physical dimensions, Lowry could see a promotion to the active roster during the second half of the season if the team requires more veteran production in their interior defensive schemes.
