Amazon Basics Luggage Outperforms Luxury Brands in Rigorous NYC Durability Testing

In a competitive market often dominated by high-end luxury brands and high-tech features, a budget-oriented underdog has claimed a surprising victory in luggage durability. The Amazon Basics Hardside Suitcase has emerged as the top performer in a series of intensive physical evaluations designed to simulate the extreme wear and tear of urban travel and international transit.

As part of the inaugural Made It Here Luggage Awards, nine prominent suitcase brands were subjected to a gauntlet of challenges in New York City. The testing regimen went beyond standard consumer reviews, forcing the products to endure subway commutes, packing capacity trials, and maneuvering through the cramped confines of city bodegas. The most definitive phase of the evaluation was a high-impact drop test, intended to replicate the repeated mechanical and manual tossing a suitcase undergoes during airport baggage handling.

In the durability and scratch-resistance assessment, testers threw the suitcases down a flight of stairs five consecutive times. While the field included the aluminum Rimowa and the esteemed Carl Friedrik—the latter of which retails for more than $1,000—the under-$100 Amazon Basics Hardside Suitcase proved more resilient than its luxury counterparts. Following the five intense drops, the Amazon Basics model remained functional and largely unscathed, a result that surprised the testing team given its significantly lower price point.

The specific model tested is part of a four-piece set currently priced at approximately $107. The comprehensive travel kit includes a hardside carry-on, a hardside checked suitcase, a tote, and a dedicated travel case. Senior social media manager Michelle Moezam, who served as the official tester for the brand, noted that the luggage held up remarkably well against the abrasive surfaces of New York City streets.

Beyond simple durability, the testing highlighted several functional design choices within the Amazon Basics line. The hardside suitcases feature an expandable design that allows for a 15% increase in packing capacity. They also incorporate a “smart sleeve” system, which allows the tote bag to be securely connected to the suitcase handles for more stable transport.

Inside the luggage, Moezam pointed to an organized interior layout as a key strength. The design includes a wide-opening mechanism and internal compression bands to secure clothing. Notably, one side of the interior features a compartment that zips completely shut, preventing shoes or other items from mingling with clean garments.

While the Amazon Basics line lacks some of the specialized hardware found on premium competitors, the testing suggests that for travelers focused on longevity and value, the simplified design offers a high degree of structural integrity. Available in a variety of high-visibility colors, the set is positioned as a practical option for frequent travelers or families seeking multi-piece luggage solutions without the premium cost associated with designer labels. The results of the drop test indicate that the budget hardshell construction is capable of surviving the same rigors as aluminum and high-end polycarbonate models.
