Moussa Diabaté Anchors Charlotte Hornets’ Paint Dominance With Relentless Energy

While teammate Brandon Miller commanded attention with a stellar 39-point scoring performance, French interior player Moussa Diabaté quietly dictated the physical terms of the game beneath the rim. Facing the Washington Wizards, Diabaté delivered a strong statistical outing with 11 points and 17 rebounds, playing a central role as Charlotte established command inside the paint.

The Hornets controlled the boards by a 54-41 margin, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds that generated vital second-chance opportunities. Those extra possessions proved crucial in resisting a late push from Washington and securing a 110-103 victory.

“I’m just trying to play as hard as possible, no matter the opponent or the situation,” Diabaté noted. “I believe when you play the right way, with the right energy, good things end up happening. It doesn’t always show in the statistics, but that’s what I’m trying to bring every day.”

This high-motor style has become Diabaté’s signature path to sustained playing time. His relentless activity on the glass previously earned him a spot in Charlotte’s rotation, a contract extension, and the team’s hardest-working player award. Rather than forcing alterations to his natural game, the big man recognized that specializing in dirty work and creating extra possessions made him indispensable without requiring plays to be called for him.

“During my first year here, I got a chance to get into the rotation because I was rebounding and playing hard,” he explained. “When you find your niche, you try to stick to it as much as possible. I understood I could really rebound, so I had to insist on that.”

Against Washington, that aggressive approach enabled him to hold his ground against a frontcourt featuring Anthony Davis, who posted 29 points and 10 rebounds, alongside Alex Sarr, Diabaté’s former teammate with the French national team. While matchups against elite players like Davis can provide extra motivation, Diabaté emphasizes maintaining consistency regardless of the competition.

“There is obviously a certain excitement when you face an All-Star, but it all comes down to habits,” he said. “No matter who is in front of you, you have to play with the same intensity. I certainly don’t want to lose that. I want to approach every game in exactly the same way.”

This clear division of labor defines the current success of the Hornets. While Diabaté handles the interior battles and extra possessions, Brandon Miller carries the primary offensive burden. Following a 34-point night against Miami, Miller followed up with 39 points against the Wizards.

In high-stakes moments, Charlotte maintains a clear hierarchy regarding who takes the key shots, and Diabaté sees no reason to alter that dynamic.

“We all trust him with the ball,” Diabaté said of Miller. “There is no hesitation about who should have it. Whether he scores or misses, we are behind him. The whole team trusts him.”
