ABC World News Tonight Secures Massive Ratings Sweep and 35-Year Record Lead

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” has strengthened its position as the preeminent evening news program in the United States, finishing the week of October 12, 2026, as the top-ranked newscast across both broadcast and cable television. According to the latest data from Nielsen Media Research, the program swept all key measurement categories, including total viewers and the highly coveted younger demographics prized by advertisers.

During the measured week, “World News Tonight” averaged 8.356 million total viewers. This performance placed the program significantly ahead of its nearest competitors, outperforming “NBC Nightly News” by more than 1.7 million viewers and more than doubling the audience of “CBS Evening News.” In the primary advertising demographic of Adults 25-54, the program recorded 1.133 million viewers, while it drew 843,000 viewers in the Adults 18-49 category.

The margin of victory over rival networks was particularly pronounced during this period. “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News,” which averaged 6.642 million total viewers, 1.018 million Adults 25-54, and 755,000 Adults 18-49. This represents a 26% advantage for ABC in total audience. The gap between ABC and “CBS Evening News” was even wider; CBS averaged 4.219 million total viewers, 655,000 in the 25-54 demo, and 479,000 in the 18-49 demo. ABC’s lead over CBS in total viewers reached 98%, nearly doubling the CBS audience with a margin of 4.137 million viewers.

Historical data suggests the current season is one of significant milestones for the broadcast. “World News Tonight” is currently drawing its largest season viewership in six years, dating back to the 2020-2021 season. The program has now maintained the number-one spot in total viewers for 11 consecutive years. Furthermore, the lead over the CBS program has reached a historic peak; the current season lead of 4.240 million viewers is the largest recorded in at least 35 years, a stretch dating back to the 1991-1992 season when the Nielsen electronic database was first established.

In terms of growth, the program showed momentum on both a short-term and long-term basis. Compared to the previous week, total viewership rose by 2%, adding approximately 137,000 viewers. Gains in the Adults 18-49 demographic were also noted, increasing by 1%. The year-over-year comparisons are even more striking. For the same week in 2025, “World News Tonight” saw a 9% increase in total viewers (up 638,000), a 22% increase in Adults 25-54, and a 34% surge in the 18-49 demographic.

Season-to-date figures reinforce this upward trajectory. For the 2026-2027 season, the program is averaging 8.424 million viewers, representing a 14% increase compared to the same point last season. Growth in the demographics is also outpacing previous years, with a 33% increase in Adults 25-54 and a 42% increase in Adults 18-49. This growth has allowed ABC to widen its seasonal lead over NBC by 9% and expand its demo leads by 75% in the 25-54 category and 81% in the 18-49 category compared to the prior year.

The ratings findings are based on Nielsen’s Live+Same Day Big Data Plus Panel Program Ratings. The broadcast, anchored by David Muir and executive produced by Chris Dinan, continues to hold its eighth consecutive season at the top of the demographic rankings.

“World News Tonight with David Muir” airs weekdays at 6:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
