49ers Star Fred Warner Fined Heavily by NFL, Faces Growing Suspension Threat

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner is facing a mounting threat of suspension after the NFL levied a hefty fine against him following last week’s game against the Washington Commanders.

League discipline cost Warner a total of $65,673 for two separate unnecessary roughness violations during San Francisco’s narrow victory. The bulk of the penalty, amounting to $47,762, stemmed from a hit on Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo. Officials initially threw a penalty flag on the play before ultimately picking it up.

Following these latest penalties, Warner is now in a precarious position regarding his availability on the field. The star linebacker faces an automatic one-game suspension if he is disciplined for two additional hits on defenseless players. Furthermore, Warner has previously been penalized for a hip-drop tackle, an infraction that carries its own cumulative threshold leading to a potential suspension if a player reaches a total of three such violations.

This is not Warner’s first brush with league discipline this season. Back in Week 3, he was fined $41,793 for two separate violations involving Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. That incident included a penalty for illegal use of the helmet alongside an uncalled hip-drop tackle.

The disciplinary actions arrive as the 49ers navigate a critical stretch of the NFL season. San Francisco managed to hold on for a 23-17 victory over the Commanders on Monday Night Football after nearly relinquishing a 20-point lead. While the team remains undefeated with a 6-0 record through six weeks, injuries have already depleted key areas of the roster.

The 49ers are currently playing without their top two wide receivers, Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel, both of whom are sidelined. Given the existing roster strain, the franchise can ill afford to lose a defensive anchor like Warner to a suspension.

Competition within the NFC West remains fierce, making every roster spot and player availability crucial as San Francisco pursues a deep postseason run.
