P.J. Fleck and Gophers Prepare for Big Ten Rushing Leader Kamari Moulton

MINNEAPOLIS — Coming off a difficult road loss and a much-needed bye week, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are turning their complete defensive focus toward stopping one of the most productive playmakers in the Big Ten. Head coach P.J. Fleck acknowledged this week that containing Iowa running back Kamari Moulton presents a towering challenge as the two programs prepare for the annual Battle for Floyd of Rosedale at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Moulton enters the rivalry matchup leading the conference in rushing yards per game, displaying a combination of physicality, speed, and durability that has powered the Hawkeyes’ offense. Fleck emphasized that Moulton’s success stems not just from raw athleticism, but from an advanced understanding of blocking schemes and running lanes.

“No. 28 is a really good tailback, he runs the ball really, really well, a lot of what they do is zone schemes to open the gaps, and he has a really good feel for hitting it,” Fleck said. “He knows where the zone is going to hit, and he understands the entire run game.”

Memory of past defeats still looms in Minneapolis. During Iowa’s last visit, running back Kaleb Johnson completely dominated the contest against Fleck’s defense, churning out 206 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Recognizing that Moulton possesses a similar capacity for explosive production, Fleck anticipates a bruising battle in the trenches on Saturday.

Fleck pointed out that Moulton excels at grinding out tough yardage even when blocking breaks down, noting his persistence and ability to keep his legs churning through contact. Compounding the challenge is a massive, physical Iowa offensive line stocked with future NFL prospects, complemented by a dynamic group of wide receivers.

Minnesota enters the game with a 4-2 record, but currently ranks 52nd nationally in rushing defense—a vulnerability that Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is expected to target. The Gophers’ defense struggled significantly two weeks ago against Purdue, surrendering 305 total yards on the ground, including 195 yards and three scores to Boilermakers running back Fame Ijeboi. With both teams returning from a bye week, Fleck expects Iowa to deploy fresh playbook wrinkles to exploit those gaps.

Despite those defensive concerns, Fleck expressed confidence in key defensive stalwarts such as edge rusher Anthony Smith and linebacker Maverick Baranowski to set a physical tone. Slowing down Moulton will require strict discipline, minimal margin for error, and sound gap control on every snap.

Ferentz has shown complete confidence in handing Moulton a heavy workload, trusting the running back to wear down opponents and pick up crucial yardage as the game progresses, particularly in the fourth quarter. Beyond carrying the ball, Moulton contributes as a reliable pass-protector and a versatile receiver out of the backfield.

“They’re getting the ball to him in a lot of different ways,” Fleck said, emphasizing that his defense will need to account for the star running back on every single play to prevent another runaway performance by the Hawkeyes’ ground game.
