Dayana Yastremska Saves Five Match Points to Defeat Katie Volynets in Guangzhou Thriller

Dayana Yastremska demonstrated remarkable resilience on Tuesday in Guangzhou, once again erasing a steep deficit to overcome eighth-seeded Katie Volynets 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) in a grueling 2-hour and 44-minute encounter.
The hard-fought victory echoes a nearly identical escape earlier in the week, when Yastremska saved five match points during her opening-round qualifying match. Facing her close friend and compatriot on the court, the Ukrainian found herself staring down the exact same mathematical peril before mounting a stirring recovery.
Reflecting on the contest after the match, Yastremska acknowledged the emotional complexity of facing someone she considers a good friend. She noted that the atmosphere was intense and that she chose to focus purely on competing rather than keeping track of the scoreboard.
The match itself proved to be a volatile affair marked by shifting momentum. Yastremska managed to edge out a tight opening set, but a noticeable dip in her level during the second set allowed Volynets to dominate and comfortably force a deciding third set.
That momentum carried forward as Volynets seized control in the decider, building a commanding 5-2 lead and putting herself within striking distance of the victory. Yastremska initiated her comeback in the very next game, saving her first match point before breaking Volynets’ serve to narrow the gap to 5-3.
She successfully held her own service game to make it 5-4, and then orchestrated a dramatic escape by erasing three more match points as Volynets attempted for a second time to serve out the match. The pivotal stretch included a grueling 20-point game where Yastremska wiped away the fourth of those five match points with a blistering forehand return winner.
Into the deciding tiebreak, Yastremska established an early 4-1 advantage. She subsequently earned two match points at 6-4, and although Volynets fought to stay alive, Yastremska finally converted her fourth overall match opportunity when Volynets sent a final forehand long.
The tactical contrast between the two players defined the flow of the match. Yastremska played an aggressive, high-risk brand of tennis, blasting 37 winners against 76 unforced errors. By contrast, Volynets adopted a steadier approach, finishing the contest with eight winners and 19 unforced errors.
Looking ahead to the next round, Yastremska faces an entirely unfamiliar challenge. She is set to play Shi Han, who advanced past Alevtina Ibragimova in straight sets during her own opening match.
Because the two have never faced each other on the WTA Tour, Yastremska noted that she intends to review footage and prepare thoroughly ahead of their first career meeting.
