Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets Look to Build on Early Momentum

The Washington Wizards and host Charlotte Hornets head into their Monday night meeting with a mix of early-season positives to evaluate and roster challenges to navigate.

Both teams secured victories on Saturday to provide an encouraging backdrop for their upcoming matchup. For the Hornets, however, the opening stretch of the home schedule has tested their resilience. Charlotte suffered a 47-point loss to Atlanta in its home opener and subsequently watched a 23-point lead evaporate against Miami before recovering to secure a 115-110 victory. Brandon Miller paced the Hornets in that win with 34 points, tying the third-highest scoring performance of his four-year career.

“Every game is not going to be perfect,” Miller said after the contest. “Our mindset, other teams are going to go on runs and it’s how we respond to it.”

Miller has experienced early turbulence from the floor, shooting 29.7% through his first three games after connecting at nearly 43% for his career. Hornets coach Charles Lee expressed confidence that the young forward will find his rhythm. “That’s why you never overreact to shooting numbers or shooting slumps,” Lee said. “That guy has a body of work that is just very impressive.”

Charlotte also leaned on contributions from veteran newcomers Naz Reid and Grayson Allen down the stretch against Miami to capture the team’s first home win of the season. Miller noted the value of having players who have experience reaching the postseason. Reid acknowledged the quick embrace from the local crowd and emphasized the importance of veteran composure in tight situations, while Lee highlighted the defensive presence provided by veteran guard Dennis Schroder.

Despite those additions, the Hornets have played their first three games without Kon Knueppel, Coby White, and Grant Williams due to various injuries. Knueppel resumed individual on-court activity nearly a week ago, though the team has not established a target date for his return.

On the opposing side, the Wizards enter Monday’s game following a 124-120 road victory at Chicago on Saturday. Trae Young led Washington with 25 points. Young remains a familiar adversary for Charlotte from his years with the Atlanta Hawks, and he has paced the Wizards in scoring over the past two games following Anthony Davis’s 34-point opening-night performance.

Wizards coach Brian Keefe praised his squad’s effort against Chicago. “We were able to establish physicality,” Keefe said. “We stayed with it, and that was the part that was really great.” Keefe also pointed to the defensive versatility of Kyshawn George, specifically noting his ability to guard larger opponents and praising his work ethic.

Washington continues to play without No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, who will miss his fourth consecutive game on Monday while recovering from a left ankle injury. Nevertheless, the Wizards demonstrated considerable depth by deploying 10 players in the rotation during Saturday’s victory in Chicago.

Historically, the matchup features shifting momentum between the two franchises. Charlotte swept the four-game season series during the 2025-26 campaign, while Washington had claimed the previous five meetings.
