Winnipeg Jets Trade Star Goalie Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey Devils in Blockbuster Deal

The Winnipeg Jets have finalized a major roster overhaul by trading star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils. The move concludes months of speculation following a trade demand from the two-time Vezina Trophy winner, marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape for both franchises early in the NHL season.

In exchange for the elite netminder, Winnipeg receives a substantial return that balances immediate roster needs with long-term assets. The package includes veteran forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, and highly touted prospect Alexander Command. Additionally, the Jets acquired a 2029 second-round draft pick and a 2027 seventh-round selection.

While the addition of Mercer and Bjugstad addresses the Jets’ immediate offensive depth, the inclusion of Alexander Command is viewed as a foundational piece of the trade. Command was selected 12th overall in the draft this past June and is currently refining his game in his native Sweden. A natural center with two-way capabilities, Command has been playing within the Örebro organization. While he has appeared in five professional games in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) this season without scoring, his performance in the country’s top U20 circuit has been dominant, where he has averaged two points per game.

Scouting reports on Command highlight a rare blend of offensive skill and physical intensity. Known for a high-end shot, Command is also described as an aggressive and abrasive competitor who possesses a notable “mean streak.” At the junior level, he has demonstrated the physical strength to bully opponents his own age, making him a difficult matchup for defenders. This abrasive style is expected to complement the Jets’ current prospect pool, which includes the smart, finesse-oriented center Viggo Björck.

Command’s international resume further underscores his potential. He was a key contributor to Sweden’s gold-medal victory at the U18 Men’s World Championship last spring, recording seven points in seven games to finish third in team scoring. He is widely expected to represent Sweden again at the upcoming World Junior Championship as the team seeks to defend its title.

For the Jets, Dawson Mercer represents the most significant immediate acquisition. Mercer provides top-nine versatility and a proven scoring touch that will help offset the loss of Hellebuyck by bolstering the team’s forward group. Nick Bjugstad adds veteran experience and size to the lineup, while Nico Daws enters the organization to help fill the void in the crease left by Hellebuyck’s departure.

By moving Hellebuyck now, the Jets have resolved a lingering internal distraction while securing a high-ceiling prospect in Command who could eventually slot in as a top-six center. The trade signals a commitment to a new era in Winnipeg, one defined by a younger, more physically imposing core. The New Jersey Devils, meanwhile, solidify their goaltending with one of the most decorated players at the position as they look to establish themselves as primary contenders in the Eastern Conference.
