US Measles Cases Climb to 4,588 Amid Persistent Nationwide Outbreak

Federal health officials reported 4,588 measles cases across the United States as of October 22, reflecting an increase of 178 infections over the preceding week as a prolonged outbreak of the highly contagious virus persists.

Data released by public health authorities show that measles-related hospitalizations nationwide have reached 479 this year. The demographic impact of the outbreak spans multiple age groups, with school-aged children and teenagers bearing the heaviest burden. Individuals between the ages of 5 and 19 account for 1,914 infections, representing 42 percent of all reported cases. Adults aged 20 and older follow closely behind with 1,881 cases, or 41 percent of the total.

Pennsylvania has emerged as a significant center of the outbreak, registering 1,317 measles cases and 251 hospitalizations as of October 21, according to state health department figures. The toll in Pennsylvania has also included fatalities, though a discrepancy exists between state and federal mortality counts. The Pennsylvania state health department has reported five measles-related deaths within its borders this year, while the federal health agency has officially confirmed three measles-associated deaths nationwide.

In response to the heavy disease burden in Pennsylvania, federal health officials previously announced plans to deploy additional support and personnel to assist state authorities in investigating and managing the expanding outbreak.
