Unlicensed Teen Driver Sentenced to Over Two Years for Fatal Gaithersburg Crash

A 19-year-old man was sentenced to two years and five months in prison stemming from a May 2025 collision in Gaithersburg, Maryland, that resulted in the death of an 88-year-old woman and left another person injured.
Liam Coskun received a 14-year sentence from a judge, who suspended all but 18 months of the term. Under the conditions of the sentencing agreement, Coskun waived credit for 11 months he had already spent behind bars, resulting in a total active prison term of two years and five months. Court officials indicated that once he is released from prison, Coskun will face five years of supervised probation, with the first 18 months required to be served under home detention.
The sentencing follows a guilty plea entered by Coskun in June to charges of grossly negligent manslaughter and the unauthorized use of a vehicle. The criminal case arose from a fatal collision on May 31, 2025, at the intersection of Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road in Gaithersburg.
Investigators established that Coskun was operating a Jeep without a valid driver’s license at the time of the incident. According to court records, the Jeep struck the rear of a Toyota that was legally stopped at the intersection. An investigation concluded that the fatal crash was entirely avoidable and revealed that Coskun failed to stop for a red traffic signal before impact.
Authorities also reported that an alcohol concentration test administered several hours after the crash showed Coskun had a breath alcohol concentration of .09. Months after the incident, Coskun turned himself in to law enforcement on November 21, 2025. Information regarding the case and the sentencing terms was provided by the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
