Tyrese Maxey Remains the Driving Force of Philadelphia’s Star-Studded Offense

When a franchise assembles a roster featuring multi-time MVPs and Finals MVPs, the temptation to completely overhaul the tactical hierarchy is often difficult to resist. Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse, however, has chosen stability over reorganization as the team begins its campaign, keeping guard Tyrese Maxey firmly positioned as the primary focal point of the offense.
The Philadelphia roster now boasts elite company, including four-time MVP LeBron James, reigning scoring champion Joel Embiid, and Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. With such a massive influx of decorated talent and the return of a healthy Embiid, speculation naturally arose regarding whether Nurse would pivot the team’s offensive engine toward his newly acquired veterans.
Yet the opening two games of the regular season signaled a clear continuation of the team’s established identity. Maxey, who turns 25 and is coming off a breakout campaign where he averaged 28.3 points and 6.6 assists per game while shooting .462 from the field, .367 from beyond the arc, and .892 from the free-throw line, has not taken a backseat. Instead, he continues to dictate the tempo with his signature high-intensity play on both ends of the floor.
In Philadelphia’s season-opening 106-100 victory over the New York Knicks, Maxey immediately seized center stage. He led all scorers with 28 points, putting up nine more points than any teammate, and paced the squad with 19 field goal attempts, four more than anyone else on the floor. In addition to his scoring output, Maxey distributed five assists, ranking third on the team and trailing only LeBron James, who dished out seven.
The guard’s role expanded even further in the team’s second outing, a dramatic 114-106 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers capped by a 29-point comeback. Maxey again led all scorers with 32 points on a team-high 23 shot attempts, while tying for the team lead with six assists.
Through the early stretch of the season, Maxey paces the 76ers with a 26.3 usage rate. While the roster features enough collective firepower to demand consistent touches and shot attempts for James, Embiid, and Brown, Nurse’s continued reliance on Maxey underscores his value to the franchise. Embiid’s durability remains a consideration given his 59 appearances since the start of the 2024-25 season, and James approaches his 42nd birthday in the coming months, making Maxey’s youth, durability, and chemistry with the system invaluable assets.
Rather than disrupting a winning formula to accommodate incoming pedigree, the 76ers have leaned into the player who has served as their heartbeat for seasons, proving that Maxey remains the undisputed engine of Philadelphia’s championship ambitions.
