Trump Issues Statement Commemorating Reformation Day and Religious Freedom

President Donald Trump issued a formal statement commemorating Reformation Day, linking the historical movement to the foundation of American religious liberty and national identity. The White House statement highlighted the events of 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

In his message, the president emphasized the historical role of faith in American history. From the earliest days of the republic, he stated, prayer and faith have served as foundational elements of national strength, unity, and greatness.

The statement drew a direct line from Luther’s actions to subsequent historical developments, noting how William Tyndale was inspired to publish the first New Testament printed in English five centuries ago. According to the administration, these scriptures helped shape the religious convictions that influenced the nation’s founding ideals of individual liberty and God-given rights.

Trump also addressed his administration’s domestic priorities regarding religious expression. Guided by faith, he noted that his administration is working to restore moral and religious foundations, pledging ongoing support for citizens of faith and their presence in the public square. He praised the role of churches in strengthening families and serving communities across the United States.

Alongside the official proclamation, the White House observed Halloween, with President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump sharing video footage of children trick-or-treating at the executive mansion on October 31, 2026.
