Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Says Iran Economy Is Collapsing Under U.S. Sanctions

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the Trump administration’s aggressive financial restrictions and sweeping sanctions are severely destabilizing Iran, asserting that the country’s economy is currently collapsing under mounting pressure.

During an interview on the Brian Kilmeade Show, Bessent outlined the administration’s economic campaign, highlighting an eight-week Treasury initiative known as Operation Economic Outcast. According to the Treasury chief, the operation builds upon an existing blockade designed to sever the financial and commercial lifelines that have historically enabled Iran to sustain its operations despite long-standing U.S. penalties. He estimated that Iran’s gross domestic product could contract by 20% to 25% as a result of these coordinated measures.

Bessent pointed to several specific enforcement actions taken under the broader strategy, including the implementation of new authorities that shut down Iranian airline travel. He noted that restricting aviation access has exerted a tangible psychological and logistical toll, particularly on the nation’s elites and regime insiders.

Financial enforcement efforts have also expanded internationally to target foreign banking channels facilitating transactions for Tehran. Bessent highlighted Treasury actions directed against banking operations linked to Egypt, Turkey, and Russia. Specifically, he noted that the Dubai branches of an Egyptian bank processed more than $1.8 billion in transactions potentially tied to Iranian financial networks.

Federal authorities have made examples of sufficient individuals and entities to deter further illicit financial activity, according to Bessent, who added that Washington is receiving good cooperation from international partners as the Iranian regime becomes increasingly desperate.

The domestic fallout within Iran is extending beyond government treasuries to affect basic state functions and security apparatuses. Bessent reported that the economic strain has reached a level where some military personnel are going unpaid and certain police officers are failing to report for duty.

As the administration weighs its next steps against Tehran, Bessent emphasized that President Donald Trump retains a range of additional policy options.
