Thousands Rally in New Delhi Demanding Election Chief’s Resignation

Thousands of demonstrators converged on New Delhi on November 1, 2026, demanding the immediate resignation of India’s chief election commissioner amid an escalating political confrontation over sweeping revisions to the nation’s voter rolls.

Indian National Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi spearheaded the Sunday demonstration, riding in an open-top vehicle alongside fellow opposition figures as crowds waved national and party flags. The march proceeded from central New Delhi toward the historic Ramlila Maidan ground, capping more than a month of continuous opposition protests against the conduct of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the recent overhaul of electoral lists.

Opposition factions contend that the revision process, which resulted in the removal of more than 130 million names from voter registries, systematically targeted Muslims and other minority groups perceived as unlikely to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. The sustained wave of demonstrations began in late September after two of Kumar’s deputy commissioners voiced formal concerns regarding the handling of registration procedures, digital systems, and voter list updates.

The Election Commission has rejected accusations of political partiality, maintaining that the procedural revisions were legitimate and noting that individuals whose names were improperly purged retain the opportunity to register again. Meanwhile, the BJP has condemned the opposition’s campaign, arguing that their challenges to official electoral procedures undermine democratic institutions ahead of the next general election scheduled for 2029.

Ahead of Sunday’s march, authorities established heavy security cordons, deploying hundreds of police officers equipped with shields and batons alongside riot-control vehicles while implementing wide-scale traffic diversions across the capital.

Government figures strongly condemned the mass mobilization. Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda dismissed the gathering as a carefully orchestrated drama, telling reporters that the events at Ramlila Maidan represented a calculated conspiracy to provoke national anarchy under the guise of democratic participation.

The demonstrations represent a broad coalition involving opposition political parties, student groups, and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party. Political analysts have characterized the ongoing protests and mounting popular resistance as the most severe political challenge Prime Minister Modi has faced since assuming office in 2014.
