Shopify CEO Transforms Wine Cellar Into Local AI Server to Track Daily Stress

Shopify Chief Executive Officer Tobi Lütke has converted an underused home wine cellar into a private data center housing enterprise-grade hardware capable of fully training artificial intelligence models at home. Speaking on an episode of the Sources podcast released on Wednesday in a conversation with Alex Heath, Lütke explained that he consulted his “inner 16-year-old” before deciding to repurpose the empty storage space for advanced computing equipment.

The custom residential setup features a server rack equipped with a Dell computer utilizing Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell Ultra computing platform, known as the GB300. According to Lütke, the hardware enables him to execute advanced machine learning workloads directly at home, providing a secure environment for sensitive information that cannot be routed to external laboratories or third-party cloud services.

The local artificial intelligence system operates custom scripts designed to aggregate personal and professional data streams, including calendar schedules, geolocation metrics, and biometric information from a Fitbit fitness tracker. Lütke described the assistant as the most compelling technology product he has ever encountered, noting that it autonomously gathers background research, prepares briefings, and processes daily lifestyle data.

By cross-referencing physiological markers such as heart rate data with his professional calendar, the executive discovered which meetings and colleagues generate the highest levels of physiological stress. Asked during the podcast whether he shared those findings with the affected individuals, Lütke confirmed that he did, though he noted that the colleagues did not find the discovery as amusing as he did.

The personal deployment mirrors a broader trend among major technology executives adopting artificial intelligence for customized daily workflows. Google CEO Sundar Pichai previously utilized agents to monitor internal discussions and compute usage, Apple CEO Tim Cook relies on automated summaries for electronic mail correspondence, and OpenAI leader Sam Altman has turned to conversational models for parenting guidance.

Within his corporate leadership role, Lütke has simultaneously pushed Shopify staff to integrate automated systems into daily operations. In a public memorandum issued in April 2025, the chief executive instructed all company teams to formally demonstrate why existing business objectives cannot be achieved through artificial intelligence before receiving authorization to hire new personnel.
