Senator Ashley Moody Secures $11 Million Federal Grant for Port of Fernandina Infrastructure

The Port of Fernandina in Northeast Florida is set to receive an $11 million federal infrastructure grant aimed at combating severe flooding and repairing deteriorating docks. The funding was secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Port Infrastructure Development Program following advocacy from federal lawmakers.

U.S. Senator for Florida Ashley Moody championed the funding push, writing a letter in June to Maritime Administration Administrator Capt. Stephen Carmel to outline the pressing challenges facing the regional facility. According to local officials, extreme chronic flooding and structural deterioration have increasingly hampered the port’s daily operational capacities, restricted cargo-handling capabilities, and raised concerns regarding employee safety standards.

“Florida’s ports are critical to our economy, supporting thousands of jobs and helping businesses move goods across the country and around the world,” Senator Moody said following the funding announcement. She emphasized that the investment will protect vital infrastructure, strengthen supply chain reliability, and ensure the port continues to serve the region.

Congressman Aaron Bean also underscored the strategic importance of the facility to Northeast Florida’s economic and transportation network, describing it as a small but vital asset. The federal investment will directly target recurring flood vulnerabilities and dock integrity, addressing issues that local businesses and supply chains depend on daily.

The newly secured $11 million will be allocated toward a comprehensive suite of improvement projects. Planned upgrades include significant drainage system enhancements, the installation of water capture infrastructure, and the deployment of specialized pumps designed to manage heavy rainfall and storm surge events. In addition to flood control, the funding will support crucial structural repairs, encompassing crane rail rehabilitation, concrete deck patching, beam reinforcement, pile repairs, and the application of cathodic protection systems.
