Seahawks Throttles Undefeated Chiefs 20-3 in Prime Time Showdown

Entering Week 7 as one of the National Football League’s last undefeated teams, the Kansas City Chiefs ran into a buzzsaw in Seattle, suffering a decisive 20-3 defeat against the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football. Playing on the road in prime time, head coach Andy Reid’s squad faced a daunting challenge with a shorthanded offensive unit, ultimately managing only a single field goal in a game controlled by the hosts.
The night began with a brief flash from fifth-round rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, who hauled in an 18-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Kansas City’s second play from scrimmage. However, Allen vanished from the offensive game plan for the remainder of the contest, finishing with just that single early catch and raising questions about his actual involvement in the playbook.
While Kansas City struggled to sustain momentum, Seattle’s passing attack flourished early. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba dominated the first half, repeatedly exploiting cornerback L’Jarius Sneed in the slot and presenting rookie defender Mansoor Delane with difficult moments. Smith-Njigba racked up six receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown before halftime, anchoring an explosive showing that overwhelmed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit.
Mahomes endured a difficult outing under persistent duress, playing without key targets and missing both starting offensive tackles, including Jaylon Moore and the sidelined Josh Simmons. According to advanced metrics from RBSDM, Mahomes registered an EPA per play mark of -0.39 through the first two quarters. His evening included multiple missed throws, some underthrown passes, and an interception resulting from excessive velocity under pressure.
The offensive line woes compounded the passing game’s inefficiencies. Undrafted rookie free agent Kahlil Benson struggled on multiple assignments, while right tackle Joshua Ezeudu endured a difficult matchup against the Seattle pass rush.
Special teams also proved costly for Kansas City. Kicker Harrison Butker experienced a turbulent night, missing a 58-yard attempt short as time expired in the first half to leave the Chiefs scoreless at the break. Although he converted a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter, he subsequently pushed a 45-yard try wide midway through the fourth frame.
Before Butker’s first-half miss, cornerback Nohl Williams provided a defensive bright spot by intercepting quarterback Sam Darnold in the end zone and returning the ball 64 yards to set up Kansas City’s late-half scoring opportunity.
Offensive struggles continued elsewhere on the roster. Third-year receiver Xavier Worthy failed to capitalize on an expanded role following recent productive outings, dropping a pass in the fourth quarter and showing minimal awareness on multiple plays, including a moment when he stepped out of bounds and another where he missed a key block on running back Kenneth Walker.
Rookie running back Emmett Johnson provided a few late sparks during a fourth-quarter drive, catching a 12-yard pass on second-and-20 to make third down manageable and subsequently executing a crucial block on a Mahomes scramble to move the chains.
Meanwhile, running back Kenneth Walker faced heavy resistance from the Seattle defense, managing just 36 yards on 14 carries as the hosts routinely bottled up the ground game that had previously fueled the visiting offense.
Despite the lopsided final score, the defeat serves as a sobering mid-season reality check for a Kansas City roster dealing with significant personnel limitations rather than an indicator of a permanent collapse.
