San Antonio Spurs Seek Third Straight Win Against Banged-Up Utah Jazz

The San Antonio Spurs will look to secure their third consecutive victory on Wednesday night as they travel to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Jazz in the second game of a back-to-back set. After experiencing early-season struggles, San Antonio has rebounded strongly with a pair of blowout wins over sub-.500 opponents. A victory on Wednesday would lift the Spurs above the .500 threshold for the first time this season, providing a strong signal that the team has shaken off its early rust.
San Antonio’s recent surge has been fueled by an improved defensive effort, characterized by increased ball pressure and a higher volume of forced turnovers. That defensive intensity has translated into transition opportunities and easy fast-break baskets for guards like De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, who have excelled at creating turnovers and generating runouts. Maintaining that point-of-attack pressure will be crucial against a Utah team that has averaged nearly 17 turnovers per game across its first four contests.
Offensively, the Spurs have operated most efficiently when playing at a fast pace, whether pushing the ball off a turnover or following a missed opponent shot. Conversely, the Jazz have opened the season playing at one of the slower paces in the NBA, ranking 19th in overall pace. Controlling the tempo and forcing Utah into a faster game will be a key priority for San Antonio on the road.
Victor Wembanyama enters the matchup riding a strong performance, having tallied 29 points on 14-for-21 shooting during a 130-103 victory over the Sacramento Kings. Wembanyama has done the majority of his damage by rolling to the basket, driving past defenders, and converting inside-the-arc looks. While he is shooting just 25% from three-point range this season, his efficiency near the rim should benefit from facing a severely depleted Utah frontcourt.
The Jazz are dealing with significant personnel losses, particularly in the interior. Jaren Jackson Jr. has been ruled out after being recently diagnosed with an MCL tear, an injury expected to sideline him for several months. Additionally, Lauri Markkanen is questionable with a wrist injury, and Jaxson Hayes is questionable due to a shoulder issue. The mounting injuries could leave Utah relying on a front line featuring Kyle Filipowski and Mo Bamba.
Utah’s injury report also lists Jusuf Nurkic as out with a foot injury, alongside G League assignments Trey Alexander, Kobe Bufkin, and Harrison Ingram. Despite the interior depletion, the Jazz are expected to lean heavily on strong guard play from Keyonte George and Darryn Peterson to offset their frontcourt limitations.
While San Antonio’s defense has shown progress, the team has occasionally struggled to defend the perimeter and protect the rim, particularly when Wembanyama is resting, while also giving up open looks from deep. Applying consistent backcourt pressure will be necessary to disrupt Utah’s guards and mitigate those defensive vulnerabilities.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT on October 28, 2026. The matchup will be broadcast on DAZN, with radio coverage available on WOAI (1200 AM).
