Rugby Panel Clears Leinster Prop Tadhg Furlong of Foul Play

Ireland and Leinster prop Tadhg Furlong has been cleared of any foul play following an investigation into an allegation that he grabbed the genitals of Munster player Gavin Coombes during a United Rugby Championship match last weekend.

Coombes raised the complaint directly with the referee during the game, prompting an immediate television review on the field that yielded no visible evidence of an infraction. Despite the inconclusive initial review, the referee reported the incident, leading to a formal citing for the 33-year-old Furlong, who is also a British and Irish Lion.

An independent disciplinary committee reviewed the case on Thursday. In a statement released following the hearing, the United Rugby Championship announced that the committee unanimously dismissed the citing complaint. The ruling determined that Furlong did not commit an act of foul play contrary to Law 9.27, which forbids actions against the spirit of good sportsmanship, including grabbing, twisting, or squeezing the genitals.

Although the complaint was dismissed, the disciplinary panel noted that Coombes had provided an honest account of his recollection of the events. A full written summary detailing the committee’s decision is scheduled to be released as soon as reasonably practicable.

With the dismissal, Furlong is free to play upon his next match-day selection. He is immediately available for Ireland’s upcoming Nations Championship campaign next month, which features fixtures against Argentina, Fiji, South Africa, and a final-weekend match at Twickenham running from November 27 to 29.

The case follows similar disciplinary actions in the United Rugby Championship last season, when Bulls hooker Jan-Hendrik Wessels received a nine-week suspension for grabbing the testicles of Connacht player Josh Murphy.
