Rockland Jury Convicts Haverstraw Man in Fatal Spring Valley Shooting

A Rockland County jury has convicted a Haverstraw man for his role in a 2022 shooting outside a Spring Valley apartment complex that left a 17-year-old dead and injured the victim’s aunt, prosecutors announced.

Anthony Mitchell, 27, was found guilty on Thursday, Oct. 29, of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. The charges stem from a July 8, 2022, attack at the Meadow Lane apartments located on West Eckerson Road.

According to investigators, 17-year-old Treynahel Cineus and his aunt, Rose Cineus, were parking in the complex lot early that morning when another vehicle pulled alongside them and gunfire erupted. Rose Cineus survived the shooting, but her nephew sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Court and investigative records indicate Mitchell acted in concert with three other individuals inside the attacking vehicle. Trial evidence showed that the driver, Muhssia King, later cooperated with law enforcement after being identified, but was fatally shot in Haverstraw in September 2025 in an unsolved homicide. Another occupant, Brian Thomas, testified for the prosecution. A third passenger, Ahmad Williams, declined to cooperate and ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, receiving a 10-year prison sentence.

Although Mitchell was convicted of murder and attempted murder, jurors acquitted him of weapon charges, suggesting they may not have believed he personally discharged a firearm during the incident.

Rockland Judge Kevin Russo scheduled sentencing for Dec. 23. Mitchell faces a mandatory state prison term ranging from a minimum of 15 years to life up to a maximum of 25 years to life.

Defense attorneys representing Mitchell could not be immediately reached for comment following the verdict.

Mitchell is already in federal custody, serving an 11.25-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to sexually enticing a 13-year-old girl to send him explicit images while he was held in the county jail awaiting trial for the Cineus homicide. Because the federal sentence was handed down prior to the conclusion of the state murder trial, Judge Russo will determine whether Mitchell’s upcoming state sentence runs concurrently with his federal time or begins only after the federal term is completed.

District Attorney Thomas Walsh II released a statement expressing hope that the jury’s decision brings a measure of closure to the victim’s relatives.

“A 17-year-old boy’s life was stolen in a senseless act of gun violence, leaving a family to endure a loss that no verdict can ever undo,” Walsh said.
