Purdue Prepares for High-Stakes Exhibition Finale Against Fourth-Ranked Connecticut

Purdue steps up in competition for its final exhibition contest of the season, traveling to face fourth-ranked Connecticut on Tuesday evening at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut. The matchup marks the first meeting between the two powerhouse programs since they squared off in the 2024 National Championship game. Over the last four seasons, the two programs have combined for an impressive 243-60 record, representing a winning percentage of .802.
The Boilermakers enter the game with a 0-0 record after opening their exhibition slate with victories over in-state mid-major opponents Purdue Fort Wayne and Ball State. Those wins helped snap a three-game exhibition losing skid to Division I opponents for Purdue, which dropped exhibition matches against No. 14 Arkansas in October 2023, No. 15 Creighton in October 2024, and No. 9 Kentucky in October 2025. All-time, Purdue holds a 73-10 record in exhibition games, though the program stands at 3-3 against collegiate opponents in exhibition play under current rules.
Purdue head coach Matt Painter brings a 33-3 record in exhibition games during his tenure, though he holds a 1-3 mark in exhibition road games. Painter enters the season with 501 career victories at Purdue, leaving him just 12 wins shy of passing his mentor and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Gene Keady, who holds the school record with 513 wins. Painter reached his 500th win last season against Miami in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, making Purdue only the second school in NCAA history to feature two coaches with 500 victories, alongside Kansas.
The Boilermakers carry fond memories of Hartford, having last played at the venue during the 2019 NCAA Tournament. In that postseason run, Purdue defeated Old Dominion 61-48 and knocked off defending national champion Villanova 87-61 to advance to the Sweet 16. Guard Carsen Edwards starred during that weekend, averaging 34.0 points across the two contests, including a 42-point performance featuring nine three-pointers against Villanova.
Tuesday’s game also highlights a familiar connection on the floor. Purdue freshman guard Luke Ertel and UConn sophomore guard Braylon Mullins are former grassroots teammates with Indiana Elite who grew up together in Hancock County. The two guards traded memorable performances during a high-stakes sectional battle on March 9, 2025, when Ertel’s Mount Vernon squad defeated Mullins’ Greenfield Central team 83-76 in overtime. Mullins scored 38 points in that contest, while Ertel added 36. Both players earned Indiana Mr. Basketball honors consecutively, with Mullins taking the award in 2025 and Ertel following in 2026.
Purdue holds a 4-2 edge in the all-time series against Connecticut, though the Boilermakers have not defeated the Huskies since November 29, 1982, when Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson recorded 30 points and nine rebounds in a 73-69 victory. Painter played in that matchup, recording six points and five assists.
Heading into the new campaign, Purdue must navigate significant roster turnover. The Boilermakers return just 41 starts, representing 21.0 percent of last year’s total, and only 34.6 percent of their scoring from a squad that went 30-9 overall. Historically, Painter has managed similar roster resets successfully; under his leadership, Purdue has returned fewer than 40 percent of its starters from the previous season five times previously, compiling a combined 118-55 record and capturing Big Ten regular-season titles the last two times the situation arose in 2019 and 2023.
The preseason brought a notable milestone for the program as Purdue landed third among teams receiving votes in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, ending a streak of 79 consecutive weeks ranked in the poll. The streak was the longest in school history and the second longest active streak nationally. Since March 1, 2021, Purdue has appeared in 101 of the last 104 AP Top 25 polls, with preseason poll omissions accounting for two of the three unranked weeks. Additionally, for the first time since the 2014-15 season, Purdue had no players selected to the preseason All-Big Ten Team.
Following Tuesday’s exhibition finale in Hartford, the Boilermakers will officially open their regular season against Gonzaga in the TNT Sports Hall of Fame Series in Las Vegas.
